Here’s a fun way to learn Passover-related Hebrew words. Some you’ll almost certainly know, like Pesach and matsah, but others may be new, and you’ll be able to add them to your vocabulary. You’ll need audio for this game; all the Hebrew words are spoken aloud, so you don’t need to read Hebrew to play or learn. Enjoy!
Some additional Hebrew notes:
- Although it’s translated as the Red Sea, Yam Suf (ים סוף) literally means Sea of Reeds, or Reed Sea. I included both, but Reed Sea is the proper translation.
- Another Hebrew word for freedom is cherut (חרות). The word used here, chofesh (חופש), is also used to mean a vacation or long break (i.e. summer vacation, Pesach break).
- Mageifah (מגפה) is the word used in the Tanach to mean plague; today the 10 plagues specifically are often called makot (מכות), which are blows. The verb l’hakot (להכות – where makah singular/makote plural come from), means to hit or to strike.
I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Pesach and Chag HaMatsot (Feast of Unleavened Bread)!
