We’re wrapping up our first month of school, and thankfully things have been going really well. The big boys finished up their Morocco country study, so we’ll be moving on to my absolute most favorite place in the world – ISRAEL – next week!

Aside from our usual 3Rs (reading, writing, and arithmetic), the boys spent a couple of days making a gimbri, also called a sintir, which is a Moroccan string instrument similar to a guitar. They also put together their lapbook final projects and did a great job – I was so proud of them! Every Chamishi (Thu) I provide them with the templates related to what we covered that week, and they do all the writing and cutting by themselves. They also arranged and glued together the final product yesterday, and not only am I impressed by their work, but by how much information they’ve retained over the past month. They’se learning, yall!

The lapbook features basic country facts, the flag, clocks showing the time difference, a wallet with Moroccan currency, a 5-flap folder with our Darija vocabulary, maps, and lots of pictures. They also added their boarding passes, and got their passports stamped.

They’re also learning to play chess! We started with just the pawn, and will add a new piece each week (or at whatever pace makes sense). You can find the chess set here.

The younger children are continuing with Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, putting together number puzzles and retelling the story using these printables. We’ve spent this week on the letter Dalet, and learning the animal names and colors through action games and art. My new students have learned to spell their names in Hebrew through song and their personalized name charts, so they’re also recognizing other letters, which is great! We have some cherry- and goldfish-related activities planned for next week, because food-based learning is THE BEST THING IN EDUCATION lol. I also really want to try blow painting with them (put gobs of paint on a paper and blow them with a straw to make patterns), but I’m a little worried they might suck up the paint by accident 😩. Now that I think about it, I’ll try with colored water first….
