The recent CHADASHOTnews – חדשות has been very heavy.
As a Black woman who lived through and remembers very clearly the RETSICHOTmurders – רציחות of James Byrd, Amadou Diallo, Akai Gurley, Sean Bell (that one hit me the hardest), Eric Garner, John Crawford, Michael Brown, Philando Castile (I was in Israel and had to go to teach like nothing happened), Tamir Rice, Walter Scott, Sandra Bland (I didn’t sleep well for weeks), and now Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, the news is at once infuriating, exhausting, and numbing.
HAFGANOTprotests – הפגנות have taken place nationwide, with MAFGINIMprotesters – מפגינים calling for an end to GIZANUTracism – גזענות and ALIMUT MISHTARTITpolice brutality – אלימות משטרתית. Many protestors are also demanding that cities defund the MISHTARAHpolice – משטרה, and redirect funds into providing better social services to communities.
As a result of the protests, the SHOTERpolice officer – שוטר who murdered George Floyd, as well as the SHOTRIMpolice officers – שוטרים who stood by and watched, have all been arrested and charged. Time will tell if TSEDEKjustice – צדק will be served.
Companies all over the US are putting out statements in support of CHAYYEI SH’CHORIM CHASHUVIMBlack Lives Matter – חיי שחורים חשובים , and some have made donations to IRGUNIMorganizations – ארגונים that are fighting for Z’CHUYOT HA’ADAMhuman rights – זכויות האדם for Black people in America. Time will also tell if the T’MICHAHsupport – תמיכה is genuine, or just a performance.
Love learning these important words in this format and love the underlying message. You are always teaching! Are there any books you suggest for עברית?
Is משטרה related to the word ‘master.’ Some date the origins of police brutality to slavery and slave catchers.
