February 9, 2020 is Pizza Day, and in honor of this deliciously cheesy holiday (see what I did there), I put together this YOM HAPITSAH (יום הפיצה) graphic to help you learn ten pizza words in Hebrew. Scroll down for a transliteration + transliteration of each word.

1. PITSAH MISHPACHTIT (פיצה משפחתית) is a pizza pie, or literally “family pizza.”  Pizza is a feminine noun, so MISHPACHTI (משפחתי) – family as an adjective (i.e. family-style) becomes feminine with the addition of a final Tav (ת).

2. TOSAFOT (תוספות) are toppings. The singular – TOSEFET (תוספת) – literally means “addition,” and it’s the word you’ll use for food topics, like what you might add to ice cream, and of course – pizza! I’m not big on TOSAFOT; there are only two I’ll tolerate, but more on that later!

3. MAAROCH (מערוך) is a rolling pin, and it’s a masculine noun.

4. BATSEIQ (בצק) is dough, and it’s also a masculine noun.

5. GE’VINAH (גבינה) is cheese. Which GE’VINOT (גבינות – plural) do you like on your PITSAH?

6. ME’SHULASH (משולש) is a slice of pizza. It literally means “triangle,” but if you want to order two slices of pizza in Israel, you ask for SHNEI ME’SHULASHIM (שני משולשים).

7. ROTEV (רוטב) is sauce. I like HARBEH ROTEV (הרבה רוטב) – a lot of sauce on my PITSAH!

8. ZEITIM (זיתים) are olives. ANI LO SOVELET ZEITIM (אני לא סובלת זיתים) – I can’t stand olives! I’ve tried different kinds, they’re all gross, and none of them belong anywhere near a PITSAH!

9. AGVANIYAH (עגבניה) is a tomato. AGVANIYOT (עגבניות – plural) are one of the TOSAFOT that I will eat.

10. BAZILIQUM (בזיליקום) is basil; another less common word is REICHAN (ריחן). Besides AGVANIYOT, BAZILIQUM is the only other TOSEFET that I’ll tolerate.
